Below you will find out everything you need to know about the fundraiser
for our elephant Young Mataya together with
Elephant Gin and the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.
For every 'Mataya' cocktail sold on our special card, 5€ will be donated to the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation for Mataya.
Mataya is a tragic victim of the human-elephant conflict.
Around 2 months old, Mataya was found alone and injured on the banks of the Zambezi River in Zambia. With the help of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation he is now being cared for intensively at the Elephant Nursery in Lusaka, Zambia.
Elephant Gin and Stairs Bar Berlin have teamed up to support Mataya by raising funds through a bespoke cocktail on the bar's new special menu.
For every 'Mataya' cocktail sold, Stairs Bar will donate 5€ to support Mataya's recovery, rehabilitation and eventual release to Kafue National Park.
You can find regular updates on Mataya on the Stairs Bar Instagram account and website.
Of course you can support and donate to Mataya and other elephant sages at any time without coming to the bar.

In late February 2023, Mataya's mother and the rest of his herd were evicted from the grain fields near the remote village of Mataya Unga along the Zambezi River.
As with so many rural communities, subsistence and growing crops is vital to their existence. However, corn cultivation attracts elephants, for which it is a popular food, and often leads to human-elephant conflict.
The farmers and community members responded by chasing the elephants away, firing guns, throwing stones, and making noise to scare them off.
In the excitement, Mataya was separated from his mother and found alone.
Angry at the loss of so many crops, a parishioner attempted to kill the young calf for meat, attacking him with a machete. However, other members of the community bravely rescued the calf and kept it in a safe place until Zambia's Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) Rapid Response Unit arrived on scene and took Mataya to the Game Rangers International Elephant Orphanage funded and supported by David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.

When Mataya arrived at the elephant sanctuary, he was so weak he could not stand, his blood sugar was dangerously low, and he had suffered machete wounds during the conflict.
He was traumatized, stressed and completely exhausted. It was a nerve-wracking night for the team as they tried to ensure he got the life-saving milk he so desperately needed.
Luckily, after 12 hours of intensive care, Mataya managed to get up and showed a little more interest in
his keeper and his milk.
At around two months old, he is incredibly vulnerable and needs constant physical contact, special diets and veterinary support to survive.

The Elephant Gin Foundation is a non-profit foundation that works to protect Africa's wild animals, in particular the protection of elephants and the preservation of their habitats.
The goal is to raise awareness, raise funds & collaborate with like-minded people.
The story of Elephant Gin began on journeys through Africa, which not only sparked a great passion for gin, but also drew attention to the extinction of elephants at the hands of humans. Every 15 minutes an elephant is killed by humans and the population is seriously endangered or even threatened with extinction.
That's why Elephant Gin donates 15% of the profit or 2% of the revenue (whichever is greater) of each bottle sold to elephant conservation projects.
